Hobble Wobble

Case broke his leg. To make matters worse, he broke his leg almost 2 weeks before the we knew it was broken! I’m sure you’re wondering, how in the world could we not of know he was broken! In our defense, Case has been walking, running, dancing, climbing and kicking the entire time. Our little man started limping a couple weeks ago and we began to keep an eye on him. However over time the limp got a bit worse and when he didn’t want me to put his shoe on his left foot I knew something was really wrong. We went to the Dr and even she sent him home and reported nothing was wrong. After watching him fall a couple times we went back to the Dr and demanded some x-rays.

Turns out his fibula, the outer bone on the lower left leg, was broken. I began to cry immediately. My first thought was how much pain has he been in for the past two weeks?! Case has been sleeping terrible lately, waking up every 2-3 hours but Cody and I thought he was just teething! No wonder Tylenol, teething tablets and a bottle wasn’t working. He couldn’t sleep because he was in pain! Oh the guilt, the guilt.

The good news is, after 5 hours in the ER we got his leg splinted for the weekend. We saw the orthopedic specialist on Monday and he said that Case has a toddler break. Apparently little people get these kinds of breaks all the time just because they are toddling around. So I guess I dont have to install the hidden camera system just yet. I stress the word yet.

He has only been walking about 1-1/2 months and we already have a major injury. Now he is sporting a new blue cast and hates taking a bath with a bag on his leg. According to the doc we have 3 weeks of hobbling around and he should be good as new. I think I may have the toughest baby alive for trooping around without a peep with a bum leg. But honestly folks, watch this video of him Easter egg hunting. Does this look like a tyke who has a broken leg?

Ummm, he looks like a healthy little boy in the video. I would have never imagined his leg was broken! Also you can let go of any guilt - (see quote from your blog post) "We went to the Dr and even she sent him home and reported nothing was wrong". I think you should win mother of the year award for going back and requesting an x-ray! I hope he heals quickly but it does sadden my heart to think of little ones in pain when they can't tell us how they feel using words...

Poor thing - and I'm talking about you, not him! Oh! How sad! I'm so glad you pressed the matter and got the x-rays! This same thing happened to a friend of mine when her baby (about the same age) broke her wrist. When they were in the waiting room at the orthopedist, there was another little one in there who had the same problem. I guess it is sort of common?

They made it sound common at the dr office and DHS hasn't come a knockin yet. Such a tough thing for a little one to go through.

Oh Holly I'm so sorry! I know you must have felt terrible, but I agree with Deena, even the doctor thought he was fine!! Glad you took matters into your own hands!! Way to go!

Holly, you have to learn to hide the injuries. Better stick with minimal bruising in soft, fatty areas covered by clothing. :)
