I went to the doctor today and had an ultra sound and blood work to check for down syndrome. This was the first time I got to see the baby and have the baby actually look like a baby. I saw his/her little legs kick and curl up under its bottom. I saw the baby move his/her little arms and tuck a hand under his/her chin. I saw a nose, eyes and mouth. I saw his/her little spine, head and rump. But I think the most amazing thing to see was the baby reach up his/her little hand, curl up his/her little fingers, stick out his/her little thumb and stick that little thumb in his/her little mouth......I got to see the baby suck its thumb!
I don’t know if it was seeing the baby “look” like a baby or seeing the baby doing something so innately baby but it sparked something inside me. A realization. This baby is real. This baby is mine. This baby is going to be in my arms in just a few short months. It sparked my first maternal feelings, fired up an excitement and a new feeling of love and connection inside of me. All I can say is I had a smile on my face all day long just thinking about that little thumb. Amazing.
